All right, I was mad jealous.

Ex-wife? Kane had called his ex-wife to come help us? Was this for real?

Ramon stared from Trina to Kane, his eyes huge. “You were married?”

Kane nodded. “We divorced a few months ago.”

Artan scoffed. “Divorced. That’s unusual.”

“Well, that’s none of your business,” Kane said. Trina looked at him, a certain softness to her warm brown eyes.

Artan glanced at me.

Trina turned her grin to me. “So you’re Mirella Reyes, the heart maiden. It’s an honor to meet you.” She bowed her head to me.

Irritation and embarrassment mixed with the jealousy dancing freely inside me. “Yes. Nice to meet you.”

Her grin widened. “So you’re Kane’s new squeeze.”

I gaped at her. Ramon chuckled. Artan bristled.

“What the hell, Trina?” Kane snapped.

“What? It’s fun teasing you and your new girl.” She winked at me.

“I’m not—”

Artan cleared his throat, interrupting me. “All right, that’s enough.”

Trina ignored him. “But you two know the heart maiden isn’t supposed to be touched, right? Honestly, I never understood that rule. Why can’t the heart maiden have a man of her own? Can you imagine living her entire life without getting some? Your entire life?” She beckoned to me. My cheeks heated up.

“Trina,” Kane hissed.

“Until now, it was all a story we were told as children,” she went on. This girl was seriously shameless. “But look at you. Our own heart maiden. You must be so proud of yourself.”

I cringed. If only she knew how much I had struggled with that title in the beginning.

“Trina, you should stop now.” Kane’s tone was sharp. Finite.

“Ugh, you’re still no fun.” She rolled her eyes.

Artan huffed. “All right. Enough. Trina, Kane said you could help us.”

I exhaled a relieved breath. I hadn’t been thankful for Artan in a long time, but I was thankful now.

Trina shifted her weight, and rolled back her shoulders. Ready for business. “Yeah, when he called he explained to me what happened. So you think revenants and alchemists were here.”

“Not just any alchemists,” Ramon said. “These are different.”

Trina narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“We call them red alchemists,” I said. I explained to her about their red blood mask and the red glow in their shadow swords. I also told her about the symbols we had seen before and the one we found last night. All drawn in blood.

“That’s …” She shook her head. “I’ve never heard of them before.”

“Ditto,” Kane said. “But I’ve seen the symbol, and I don’t know what to make of it.” He jerked his chin toward me, Artan, and Ramon. “If they say there is a red alchemists group out there, I believe them.”

“All right.” She nodded. “If you believe them, I do too.” Trina reached into her Hummer and grabbed a black leather satchel. She slung it across her shoulders. “Shall we start?”

Artan questioned her about what she would do and her methods, but after answering two of his dozens of questions, Trina told him to shush so she could work in peace. He didn’t like it, but thankfully, he fell silent.
